“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives.” 2 Peter 3:10-11
“The day of the Lord” is the Last Day, when Jesus will return to judge the ungodly and to redeem the faithful. This day is commonly referred to as Christ’s Second Coming, when the heavens will pass away with a great noise and the elements will melt, presumably by fire. Something much more destructive than what humans can do is in view here.
“Like a thief” emphasizes the surprise people will experience at His second coming, since He cuts off all attempts at calculating the time of His return.
“A roar” means that the heavens (sun, moon, stars, etc.) will pass away with great force and speed.
“What kind of people” is a phrase to get you to think about the fact that the primary purpose of prophetic teaching is not to satisfy our curiosity but to motivate us to change our lives. Rather than working for things that will ultimately be destroyed, we should work for things that are eternal.
God’s blessings on your day…
