“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
Corporate prayer and worship were the first of the practical issues Paul describes in this Book as he was teaching Timothy how to lead a congregation.
“Not be anxious about anything” means do not worry … period! He is directing the Philippians to stop worrying about their own problems. Instead, Paul encourages the Philippians to pray about their circumstances.
“Prayer” is the broad category of speaking to God at His invitation. “Petition” is simply specific requests for help. “With thanksgiving” is expressions of gratitude for mercies received. These are always appropriate, even when earthly circumstances are difficult, because we are never separated from God’s love and mercy in Christ.
When life makes no sense, God’s peace sustains and directs us. “Peace of God … will guard” means peace, not readiness or zeal, acts like a guardian angel for our mental health. This peace resides in Jesus, our refuge, and operates to protect the mind from external corrupting influences and to keep the mind focused on God’s truth.
God’s blessings on your day…
