“But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.” Psalm 59:16

David sings with joyful abandon of his relationship with God, despite the presence of wicked persons. There are two verbs translated “I will sing”; together they capture the idea that singing in the name of the Lord is a wonderful act of faith.

“Your love” means loyalty to one’s community; most common term for God’s grace in the Psalms (used 125 times). Luther described this Hebrew word as “goodness in action”. God’s unwavering devotion to the salvation of His people finds its fulfillment in the cross of Christ.

“Times of trouble” are days filled with danger, and fear.

When surrounded by enemies, or difficult circumstances, we turn to God in confidence and trust. Whatever He wills for us is best, even if we don’t understand it at the time. The world and all that is in it is passing away. Empires come and go. Only God and His promise of salvation in Jesus Christ stand firm, stand fast, and stand forever.

God’s blessing on your day…
