Sermon Notes – March 22, 2020

“He was numbered with the transgressors (or criminals)”
Isaiah 53:12; Matt. 27:15-26; 37; Phil. 2:6-11

Isaiah 53:12:
“…(he) poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors (criminals). For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

A. What are the odds that God’s Anointed One would be counted among criminals?
1. He was compared to Barabbas.
Mt. 27:15-26; Mk. 15:6-15; Lk. 23:13-25; Jn. 18:38b-40

2. He was crucified between two criminals.
Mt. 27:38; Mk. 15:27 Lk. 23:32; Jn. 19:18

B. Why would God let His Son be placed among criminals?
1. Because He wasn’t one.
2. Because we are.
3. Because He wanted us to know that no matter how low we think we are, He
went lower.

C. Jesus’ Descent: (Phil. 2:6-8)
1. He was equal with God (6a)
2. He emptied Himself of some of His divinity(7a)
3. He took on human form (7c)
4. He became a servant (7b)
5. He humbled Himself to criminal status (8a)
6. He became obedient to the point of death (8b)
7. He became obedient to death on a cross (8c)

D. Jesus’ Elevation: (Phil. 2:9-11)
1. God lifted Him up (9a)
2. God gave Him the greatest name (9b)
3. Every knee in Heaven will bow (10a)
4. Every knee on Earth will bow (10b)
5. Every knee under the Earth will bow (10c)
6. Every tongue will confess His Lordship (11a)
7. The Father will get glory (11b)
