“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” Colossians 3:16

“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly” is a parallel thought to Paul’s statement in Ephesians 5:18 where he says to be “filled with the Spirit.” Both here and in Ephesians, the result of being “filled” with the Spirit or the word of Christ is singing. The psalms are the psalms found in the Old Testament, which was the “songbook” of the early church as well as of Israel. The hymns would be the songs of the church that reflect the new truth in Christ. “Songs from the Spirit” are simply other kinds of songs praising God.

Songs convey some of the Bible’s greatest teachings. They are great expressions of joy and thankfulness naturally flow from the rich doctrine of Christ.

The good life is the life we receive from Jesus, including gifts that we cannot make or purchase … forgiveness, love, peace, and thankfulness. Jesus’ life fills us with virtues rather than vices and enables us to be a blessing rather than a bane to others.

God’s blessings on your day…
