“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!” Romans 11:33
“Riches … wisdom … knowledge” … the wealth of God’s grace and glory, the wisdom of His purposeful actions in history to save, and His intimate knowledge of us are too deep for human beings to fathom.
“Judgments” indicates God’s decisions (the ways He thinks) … a legal term for the decisions of a judge. This can include rules to be followed as well as declarations of freedom and innocence. Therefore, the term frequently describes justification and God’s mercy.
“Paths” or ways means a “trodden path,” used for a “pattern of behavior or custom.” “The way of the Lord” is twofold: He punishes sinfulness, but He also shows mercy to the repentant.
