“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24

Psalm 139 is attributed to David and is a wisdom psalm of descriptive praise. This mixture of wisdom and praise is not uncommon in the Psalms. This poem describes the attributes of the Lord not as abstract qualities, but as active qualities by which He relates Himself to His people.

With the term “search me” David applies God’s stringent standards to himself. He asks God to extend His omniscience to his inner life, to search out the traces of sin in his life, so that God’s presence might lead him to everlasting life.

It takes courage to ask God to search your inner self. But by doing so, you would be showing a strength of faith and understanding of God’s love by also praying for Him to “lead you in the way everlasting”.

Blessing on your day …
