“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

God’s Law declares that all people are guilty of sin and deserve to die. Death is the just punishment for sin. Here Paul concisely summarizes God’s reverse declaration for those in Christ: “Not guilty”.

Paul also teaches us that this gift of God is free. Nothing can earn God’s grace. He gives it to people who can never deserve it, for Christ’s sake in Christ Jesus.

Most often this verse has been used as a promise of regeneration. The phrase eternal life is used 42 times in the NT, and it usually refers to something we receive as a gift at the moment of belief in the gospel. But 11 of these 42 times, eternal life is presented as something to be attained. Thus, we learn from the Bible that eternal life is not simply a static entity. It is a dynamic and growing relationship with Jesus Christ Himself. Through living in faith and obedience, Christians can fully enjoy God’s free gift of eternal life.

God’s blessing on your day…
