“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1

Psalm 91 is a strong confession of faith and an example of a life entrusted to God’s protective safety. It urges readers to seek the Lord’s refuge when fearful times arise.

“Shelter” and “shadow” are metaphors that depict the sure defense found in the Lord God. The shadow is not ominous, but comforting, as that of the shadow of a mother bird’s wings.

For the Israelites, a name held who or what a person was, and expressed ownership or relationship. A name equaled one’s reputation. The names for God “Most High” and “Almighty” depict God’s incomparable power over any threat or danger.

“Most High” is a name that says God is so far above us we cannot begin to comprehend Him, while “Almighty”, translated from the ancient title Shaddai, often appears in passages about blessing and fruitfulness as well as to depict God’s power to destroy or judge. God identified Himself to Abram by this name. Together the terms “Most High” and “Almighty” speak of God as a mountain-like majesty.

God’s blessings on your day…
