“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14, 16
Light is a universal symbol for what is beneficial to people. Jesus, the light of the world, calls on His followers to fulfill that function for the world. Just as there is no hiding the light of a city on a hill, the light of a true disciple cannot be hidden.
Jesus urged His disciples to do good deeds for the people of this world to see. Good deeds are meant to lead others to glorify our heavenly Father, not to bring praise to the one who does them. Leading people to worship the true God is the whole purpose of doing good deeds.
This is one of two teachings that follow the Beatitudes to point out the principle of doing following being. Some Christians emphasize being so much they never get to the goal of doing anything.
God’s blessings on your day…
