“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:8-11

The Judean countryside has long been used for grazing sheep. David himself had been a shepherd in these fields. The night watch was kept to protect sheep from robbers and wild animals.

“Glory of the Lord” suggests that Jesus’ birth brings the Lord’s presence near to humankind. The word “glory” indicates “brightness,” “majestic power,” or “fame.” God’s radiant presence awaiting believers in heaven. In the Old Testament, God’s glory refers to His visible presence among His people … the appearance of light in the midst of darkness.

“I bring you good news” calls to mind the many prophetic promises of salvation. “Good news … great joy” are two terms that sum up what the response to Jesus’ presence should be.

“City of David” is Bethlehem.

“Savior … Messiah … Lord” are three titles which together summarize the saving work of Jesus and His sovereign position.

Angels reveal to shepherds the Good News of the Savior’s birth. The shepherds in turn announce the Good News to others. As we celebrate the glory of Christmas, can we do any less? The Savior is your peace and joy this day and always.

God’s blessings on your day…
