“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.” Hebrews 1:1-2
“In various ways” indicates God’s prophetic Word was communicated to His people through the prophets’ oral proclamation, written words, prophetic actions, and other means such as visitations, dreams, signs, parables, and events.
“God spoke … to our ancestors” … God spoke His Word to His people by means of the prophets; the words and deeds of the prophets were full of God’s power and brought about God’s will.
“To our ancestors” means those who lived by faith in the Savior God had promised.
“In these last days” implies the distinction between the words of the prophets (Old Testament) and of Jesus (New Testament), since Jesus is the last Prophet. It is the time of the definitive revelation of God’s will in Christ. Refers to a time in which God dramatically reveals and/or executes His judgment by condemning the wicked and delivering the righteous. The prophets often used this phrase with reference to the end of history.
“Appointed heir” … an heir inherits all that belongs to the parents. Jesus, as God’s only begotten Son, shares with His brothers and sisters the Father’s mercy, forgiveness, and new life.
“Through whom also He made” emphasizes the Son was not created by the Father, but always existed with Him and the Holy Spirit (John 1:1). God the Father, with the Holy Spirit, created all that exists, seen and unseen, by His Son, the Word of the Father. Jesus is the Father’s agent in creation.
God’s blessings on your day…
