“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14

The pronoun “you” is in a plural sense so Isaiah has turned from King Ahaz, whom he has dismissed in judgment, and now addresses all who are present. Consequently, the sign he is prophesying is for many.

The term “the Lord” speaks of the sovereignty of God, of His great control over all His creation; while, the pronoun “Himself” adds an absolute certainty to the impending sign.

The Hebrew word rendered virgin means “a young woman of marriageable age.” But the word also connotes “virgin” since the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible made in the second century b.c., translates the Hebrew word with a Greek term that specifically means “virgin”.

Isaiah indicated the young woman would call Him “Immanuel”, which means “God with us.” This name reflects both salvation and judgment. On the one hand, God with us promises protection, comfort and help. On the other hand, God with us promises deserved judgment for sin. Thus “Immanuel” functions as Law or Gospel, depending on one’s response.

So, some 700 years later, this prophecy comes true with the birth of the Messiah and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

God’s blessings on your day…
