“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.” Deuteronomy 18:15

All true prophets among the Hebrew people were raised up by the Lord. None could become a true prophet by self-will or desire. Israel would have a succession of prophets resembling Moses in function, declaring the Word of Lord.

“Like me” is Moses describing a prophet having a unique relationship with the Lord, one no other prophet enjoyed. Jewish commentators expected the coming of a new Moses.

Luther said this about this verse, “This is the chief passage in this whole book and a clearly expressed prophecy of Christ as the new Teacher. Hence the apostles also courageously adduce this passage … here Moses clearly describes his own end, and he yields his mastery to the Prophet who is to come.… here he states that Christ will be true man and will come from the blood of the Jews, because salvation is from the Jews. No one has ever arisen from this people who taught a different word from the word of Moses and set up a new ministry except this one Christ of ours”.

God’s blessings on your day…
