“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
The appearance and stature of Jesse’s oldest son, Eliab, commended him to leadership. But these were the very things that had commended Saul. Samuel’s focus is directed away from Saul’s ruined potential to what God will do through Jesse’s youngest son, David. David’s external appearance isn’t God’s primary focus. God seeks someone who will not run after other gods.
Because God looks on our hearts, we stand condemned before Him. Yet, He leads us to plead, “Create in me a clean heart, O God” (Psalm 51:10). By faith in the Gospel, our hearts are cleansed, and we are reassured that God will not despise a broken and contrite heart.
God’s blessings on your day…
