“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” 1 Corinthians 15:20-22

St. Paul is speaking here only about Christians. He wants to instruct and console them with this letter.

Jesus is the “first fruits” of all who believe and trust in Him. First fruits is the earliest portion of a harvest, which Israel sacrificed to God in thanks for the full harvest to come.

The term “fallen asleep” is a metaphor Paul uses to describe physical death. Because Christ rose from the dead, those who are “asleep” (dead) in Christ have a guarantee of their own resurrection.

The first man, Adam, disobeyed God and brought sin and death into the world (into all of creation); while the second Man, Jesus Christ, was the perfect sacrifice, who took away sin and brought life and resurrection to those who believe in Him. Paul is simply explaining that by one man’s (Adam’s) sin all were made unrighteous, whereas by one Man’s (Christ’s) obedience all who believe in Christ are made righteous.

God’s blessings on your day…
