“The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.” Proverbs 23:24
Good parents rejoice when they see their children growing wisely. This brings them more joy than if their children become rich or successful in school or work. But when those parents have faith in the Lord, the greatest joy comes from seeing their children be faithful to Him.
The preceding verses contain three direct appeals of a father to his son, much as Solomon had addressed his son directly 15 times in chapters 1–9. These proverbs give pointed advice that the young need to hear: (1) do not envy sinners and their drunken orgies; (2) listen to your parents and make them happy; (3) do not give in to youthful passions.
