“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30
“Fear of the Lord” is the beginning of knowledge (or wisdom), and is an essential characteristic of an exceptional woman (or man) because only those who fear the Lord will obtain the wisdom to accomplish all the other attributes described earlier.
In addition, the First Commandment teaches that “We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things”. God is the giver of all wisdom, and He desires for His people to regard Him in respect, and love.
But first stands faith, which is a sign of wisdom (as Solomon says). Such wisdom – given by God through Word and Sacrament – is the theme for the Book of Proverbs. True wisdom begins with an individual’s apprehension in knowledge and trust of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior.
