“Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” 2 Peter 1:4
“Very great and precious promises” are those by which God enables us to participate in the divine nature and to escape from the corruption that is in the world. In particular, the fulfilled promise of Christ’s first coming and the yet-to-be-fulfilled promises of Christ’s second coming, along with the creation of “new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells”. We have Christ within us, as He promised, to enable us to become increasingly Christlike.
The phrase “participate in the divine nature” does not mean that we become part of the Godhead, but simply that God indwells us through His Holy Spirit. Expression may be borrowed from popular Stoic philosophers, who emphasized the goodness of a new life.
Because we have become new creatures in Christ, we have already escaped the corruption (the moral ruin) that is in the world through perverted desires (sin). We should make our escape from this world evident to all by our godly behavior and the renewing of our mind.
Blessings on your day…
