“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

The term “loved” is used repeatedly in John and it means God’s sacrificial and faithful love for the entire world alienated from God (or agape love).

“The world” here includes all of creation … not restricted to any one nation or spiritual elite.

“Gave” means God not only sent His Son but also offered Him to the world. Jesus became the free gift of our atoning sacrifice.

“His one and only Son” expresses Christ’s divinity and origin from the Father, and thus His complete uniqueness from all other beings. It does not necessarily convey the idea of a birth. For example, Isaac is called Abraham’s “one and only son” (only begotten) in the Old and New Testaments, when actually Abraham had two sons (Ishmael and Isaac). The Son of God is the Father’s one and only, unique Son.

“Believes” … “… everyone who believes may have eternal life in Him (Jesus).” (John 3:15). Worthiness does not depend on our greatness or smallness, or the weakness or strength of our faith. Instead, it depends entirely on Christ’s merit.

“Perish” here means eternal separation from God.

God’s blessings on your day…
