“But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.” 2 Corinthians 10:17-118
Paul began this section by saying he was not going to place himself among the group that commended themselves. The reason he would not was that the Lord would commend Him as a faithful worker. Throughout this Book, Paul has been very careful to boast only in the Lord and His work in order to establish his credentials as an apostle to the Corinthians.
Paul quotes Jeremiah in verse 17. Jeremiah’s counsel, now perfectly realized in Christ, preaches salvation by grace alone from the heart of the Old Testament, showing the unity of Scripture.
The word “approved” means as a faithful servant “before the judgment seat of Christ”. A Christian does not glory in his own achievements, but in the Lord and what He has done.
