“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7

“Sparrows sold for two pennies” is a reference of the very poor purchasing sparrows for food, paying about 1/16 of a day’s wage (smallest coin in circulation). This illustrates how little meat was eaten by the common people.

“Forgotten by God” means that no sparrow, seemingly so worthless, will fall from its nest or experience harm in flight without God’s knowledge and will. This verse emphasizes that God knows the most minute detail of what happens on earth.

“Hairs … are all numbered” is Jesus emphasizing that God knows each one of us, even down to the number of hairs on one’s head.

“Don’t be afraid” is an admonition to not fear, in the sense that placing one’s life in God’s care means He knows what we need. If God knows what happens to sparrows, He certainly knows what happens to His children.

“Worth more” is a vivid way of expressing God’s boundless love and the incredible value His love bestows on those He redeems.

God’s blessing on your day…
