“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1
For answers to be received favorably, it will depend not only on the content but also on the manner in which they are offered. Often it is not so much what we say but the way we say it that prompts such varied responses as acceptance and anger.
In much of this Proverb, the characteristics of foolish and wise people are contrasted. The foolish are gullible and believe everything. They are reckless, careless, and quick-tempered. But because wise people evaluate everything on the basis of God’s Word, their words and actions are more thoughtful and guarded.
