“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Paul emphasizes the preeminence of all Scripture. Given by inspiration is literally “God-breathed.” In this verse, Paul teaches that God was actively involved in the revelation of His truth to the apostles and prophets, who wrote it down. The Author of the Bible is God Himself. Thus, Scripture is true in all that it affirms and is completely authoritative.

“Teaching” means imparting knowledge/doctrine. Paul highlights correct teaching first; Luke also emphasizes the Jerusalem church’s commitment to teaching first in Acts 2:42.

“Rebuking” is a call to repentance over sin. But this word is not simply a rebuke, but is demonstrating some truth beyond dispute.

“Correction” refers to setting something straight, and is done through God’s Word.

“Training in righteousness” means being made righteous by God’s grace. We are to live out our righteous behavior. “Training” literally means like childhood discipline and instruction.

In this list, only one of these terms is oriented to knowledge and information—that is, “teaching”. The other three in the list involve a change of life. One can conclude that Knowledge that does not change one’s life is useless.

The study of Scripture will make a believer complete, meaning “capable” or “proficient.” “Thoroughly equipped” means fully prepared. The person who masters the Word of God will never lose his or her way.

“Every good work” … Paul emphasizes the essential link between knowing God’s Word and applying it to one’s daily life. Right teaching should produce right practice.

Paul points to himself as an example for Timothy. He speaks about the great work the Gospel has produced within him. He says that our fellow Christians want to learn the faith from us, and they watch us in the same way that Timothy watched Paul. God speaks His Gospel of forgiveness and peace to us, not only through His preached Word, but also through the example and teaching of our fellow Christians. Luther called this the consolation of the brethren.

God’s blessings on your day…
