“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” 1 John 3:16

As Jesus laid down His life for our salvation, Jesus wants us to use our lives – “to lay down our lives” – that our fellow believers might be blessed and saved.

“Lay down his life” is the highest expression of love.

“For our brothers and sisters” stems from a Greek word literally translated “on behalf of”; thus, giving one’s life as a sacrifice for our brothers and sisters.

Jesus showed God’s love with His sacrifice on the cross, which demonstrated how actions speak much louder than all the promises and pronouncements that He could make. John earlier stated in verses 14-15 the need to love other believers like we love ourselves. Here, however, he goes a step further in urging us to love other believers more than we love ourselves, to be willing to give our lives for others.

Our heart should condemn us when we look at our brother, see his needs, and yet excuse ourselves from acting in love. We have true saving faith, because we love our fellow Christians.

God’s blessings on your day…
